A new Netflix show is taking our house by storm lately.  This is not an unusual thing.  Our kids often get obsessed with new shows for varying lengths of time.  What is unusual is that it is an educational show about science…. Hosted by a woman who happens to be pregnant.  A pregnant woman on tv?!?  Teaching science?!?  2020 is getting even weirder – in a good way!

The show I am talking about is call Emily’s Wonder Lab, and you are definitely going to want to check it out.  The fact it is a science show isn’t too surprising.  Every now and then the kids will get into a ‘learning’ show, which makes us feel great as parents.  This one really stands out, though, because it is hosted by Emily Calandrelli.  Apparently, Emily had been pitching the idea for a science lab type of show for a while, but has been turned down over and over. In a world of Bill Nye’s and Neil deGrasse Tyson’s, it is a breath of fresh air that Netflix would finally give a woman scientist a chance.   On top of that, she’s pregnant on the show!  They didn’t postpone filming or replace her with someone else like they could have easily done.  Guess what?? WOMEN CAN BE SCIENTIST AND SOMETIMES THEY ARE PREGNANT!!!  It’s a great message that I love seeing my daughter enjoy.

Ok, so what about the show?  They do a bunch of super cool experiments that you can do at home too.  The first thing we did to ‘play along’ was make “Oobleck” – a mixture of 2-parts cornstarch and 1-part water, with food coloring if you choose to add it.  It’s a solid, it’s a liquid… It’s a fun slimy mess that the kids lived sinking heir hands into. There are a bunch of other experiments that the kids really want to do; to tell you the truth I kind of want to do them too!

Momlando says: I want to weigh in too! I agree – nothing makes me feel like a better mom than my kids getting excited about science and learning. But as a mama, there was something even more special for me. Emily was nine months pregnant when she filmed this show!

The first time I caught up with a friend after seeing this show I said, “Have you heard of this show? It’s so cute AND hosted by a woman who is mega pregnant, and they didn’t re-cast her. Can you believe it??” Watching a pregnant woman do her thing on tv without it being the main topic was thrilling. We know how much butt pregnant mamas kick every day and think it’s time the world sees it too.
