Before having kids, I couldn’t wait to have a family board game night.  We have introduced them over the past year to mixed reviews.  Don’t get me wrong, our daughter loves playing games.  The problem is, our four-year-old doesn’t always want to follow the rules, even though she “has” to play before bed.  But, the way I see it, if she can bend the rules, so can I.

I love spending the time with my daughter playing Candyland or ‘Mickey Slides’ and I can tell she likes it a lot too.  Specifically, she likes it when she wins and when daddy gets sent back to the beginning.  I am a good sport, but eventually the game needs to end. That’s where the trickery comes in.

I am a magician now that my kids feelings are at stake.  My ability to swiftly shuffle and deal cards from the bottom of the deck is seriously impressive.  You are three spaces from winning, but are about to be sent back to the start?  Nope, it’s bedtime. Guess what sweetie, you won!  Or if you hold the spinner just right, I know how to get it to land on the right color.

Do I feel guilty?  No, I do not.  I learned that when you try to hurry the game up within the parameters of the rules, our little one will melt down.  But when you make it look like good luck that she won, everyone is happy.  I am not saying I let her win every time. But do yourself a favor, when it is time to end the game, cheat.
