J’s Cakes is the sweetest family business! And truly – family is at its heart. Mom Janelle runs the business with her husband Jason and their three children, Dominique (20), Dionne (17), and Demetrius (14). Janelle was a home baker for many years whose at home cake decorating business overtook the family kitchen. Now they have a storefront in Sanford, open six days a week and have a variety of cupcakes and desserts available for all taste buds!

Tell me about J’s Cakes:

After several years of serving my customers from home, I went in search of a commercial location to bake and decorate.  Our first storefront was located in a small strip plaza in Deltona and in October 2019 we found our current home for J’s Cakes in the Seminole Town Center Mall.

What treats can we find at the shop?

At J’s Cakes we offer over 10 flavors of cupcakes daily, fudge brownies, cheesecake slices, cookie sandwiches ready to go cakes and of course custom wedding and birthday cakes.

How did you pivot during the pandemic?

We had to get creative after our mall location was closed due to the pandemic.  Instead of relying on walk in traffic, we started offering delivery service.  The response from our customers was so great that we invested in a mobile cupcake truck.  We now have the ability to deliver door to door, serve large groups at birthday parties, corporate events or neighborhood block parties.

What’s next for J’s Cakes?

Our next project is to offer nationwide shipping of our delicious cupcakes.

Do you take custom orders?

Most of our special orders come in the way of specialty birthday cakes.  We’ve created simple buttercream cakes and even cakes with moving parts and sounds.

How does your family help with the shop?

J’s Cakes is completely family owned and operated and every one of my family members plays an important role.  My oldest daughter is second in command and she works full-time baking cupcakes, decorating cakes, and sometimes setting up the J’s Cakes Truck at various events.  Dionne is also extremely helpful and works as a cashier and cupcake baker.  My son primarily works as a cashier and my husband is a jack of all trades helping out both in the store and on deliveries.
